Nocturne for MAC
Free, open-source menu bar app for Mac that makes the clock unreadable or blanks the whole menu bar, and can follow your Focus mode.
Nocturne Overview
Nocturne is a small menu bar app for Mac that stops the menu bar clock from telling you how late it is. macOS offers no switch to hide the clock, so Nocturne makes it unreadable instead: in its default Blind mode it turns the clock into a small analog dial, so the time is still there but your eye stops catching it. Other modes go further and blank the clock, the whole menu bar, or every icon except the clock. Clicks still pass through, and Nocturne keeps its own moon icon visible so you can always switch back.
Nocturne is made by DotcomJack and is free and open source under the MIT license. It can follow Focus: add it as a Focus filter in System Settings, and when you turn on Do Not Disturb or another Focus on any of your devices, the Mac's menu bar goes quiet too, then returns to the mode you had when the Focus ends. It asks for no permissions at all, not Accessibility, not Screen Recording, and uses no private APIs. Version 1.5.0 is about efficiency: nothing changes on screen, but the app uses far less CPU at rest. Nocturne needs macOS 14 or later and is a universal app for Apple Silicon and Intel Macs. It is signed with a Developer ID and notarized by Apple, so it opens without a Gatekeeper warning. One mode, Gone, is labelled experimental by the developer and can leave a faint seam on the translucent menu bar.
Key Features
Nocturne gives you five ways to quiet the menu bar.
- Blind mode: the default, which turns the clock into a small analog dial you cannot read at a glance.
- Hide everything: blanks the whole menu bar except Nocturne's own icon, while clicks still work.
- Only the clock: hides every icon but leaves the clock readable.
- Gone: an experimental mode that draws a patch over just the clock.
- Follow Focus: a Focus filter that switches modes when a Focus starts and puts your mode back when it ends.
- Hover to show: uncovers the bar while the pointer is on it, in Gone, Hide everything and Only the clock.
- Clock options: drop the date, the day of the week or AM/PM without changing modes.
- No permissions: no Accessibility, Screen Recording or Full Disk Access, no account and no private APIs.
What’s New in Version 1.5.0
Nocturne 1.5.0 changes nothing on screen but makes the app much lighter.
- CPU use at rest fell from 0.173% to 0.042%, and wakeups from 3.71 to 1.00 per second, in the developer's measurements
- CPU use while the pointer moves fell from 3.76% to 0.60% with Hover to show on
- Timers and the hover monitor stop while the displays sleep and catch up when they wake
- Quitting no longer restarts Control Center when the clock is already digital
Nocturne FAQ
Is Nocturne free?
Yes. Nocturne is free and open source under the MIT license, with no account.
Which macOS version does Nocturne need?
Nocturne needs macOS 14 or later.
Does Nocturne run on Apple Silicon?
Yes. Nocturne is a universal app for Apple Silicon and Intel Macs.
Can Nocturne hide the menu bar clock completely?
macOS has no setting to hide the clock. Nocturne's default Blind mode makes it an analog dial you cannot read at a glance, and the experimental Gone mode draws a patch over it.
What are Nocturne's modes?
Clock visible, Blind, Gone, Hide everything and Only the clock. You choose one from the menu bar icon.
How does Nocturne work with Focus?
Add Nocturne as a Focus filter under System Settings > Focus. When that Focus starts, the menu bar changes to the mode you chose, and your previous mode comes back when it ends.
Does Nocturne need any permissions?
No. It asks for no Accessibility, Screen Recording or Full Disk Access permission and uses no private APIs.
Is Nocturne notarized?
Yes. The app and the disk image are signed with a Developer ID and notarized by Apple, so it opens without a Gatekeeper warning.
How do I get the normal clock back?
Choose Clock visible, or quit Nocturne, which restores the digital clock. Restoring always gives a digital clock, even if you used the analog one before.
Where does the Nocturne download on nocturne.FULLMAC.app come from?
The download button leads to the official Nocturne release page on GitHub at https://github.com/dotcomjack/nocturne/releases/latest. nocturne.FULLMAC.app does not change or repackage the app.

OnlySwitchOnlySwitch puts everyday macOS controls into one customizable menu bar app. Instead of digging through System Settings or typing Terminal commands, you click a switch: hide desktop icons, change appearance to dark mode, keep the Mac awake, show hidden files or the Finder path bar, connect AirPods or Bluetooth, empty the Trash or the clipboard, clear the Xcode cache, and more. You can add, remove and reorder switches, import your macOS Shortcuts, give any switch a keyboard shortcut, and place controls on the desktop as widgets.Customization
ThawThaw takes back your Mac's menu bar. It hides the icons you do not need, with an always-hidden section for the rest, and brings them back when you hover, click, scroll, swipe or press a hotkey. You can search and jump to any menu bar item from the keyboard, arrange items by drag and drop, keep related items together in groups, and show hidden items in a separate bar, which helps on MacBooks with a notch. Triggers can reveal an item when something happens, such as a low battery, a Wi-Fi network or a Focus mode, and profiles switch layouts per display or Space.Customization
SwiftBarSwiftBar lets you add your own programs to the macOS menu bar. Write a script in any language, such as shell, Python, Ruby or JavaScript, put it in SwiftBar's plugin folder, and its output appears in the menu bar, refreshing as often as you like. A plugin can show anything from the weather, a stock price or the status of a server to your unread messages, with a dropdown menu of actions underneath. You can also get ready-made plugins from SwiftBar's built-in plugin repository and from the large collection written for BitBar.Customization
